Let's Learn About Garden...

Amanda Self-Sparrow

But not really gardening :)

Word of the Week: Garden

A client recently introduced me to the idea of choosing a word of the year. She even gave me a book to help me find mine for 2025 (One Word That Will Change Your Life. Gordon, Britton and Page). I got to my ladies church retreat early and decided to start reading my book. I was about three-quarters through before the retreat officially began.

One of our first activities was to select a word from a list of about 100—one that resonated most with us. While many women picked words like growth, fulfillment, or happiness, I chose garden. It felt like an odd choice at first, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. And now a month later- I am leaning into it even more.

A garden requires care, patience, and intention. Whether it’s my business, my cooking, my strength training, or even my finances, the same principles apply:

  • Prepare the soil – Lay a strong foundation, gather knowledge, and plan ahead.

  • Plant the seeds – Start the work, knowing not everything will thrive.

  • Thin out the weaker plants – Adjust, refine, and focus on what truly matters.

  • Encourage the right insects – Welcome support and helpful influences.

  • Weed regularly – Remove distractions or things that hold me back.

  • Add nutrients – Seek guidance, education, and inspiration.

  • Pray for sun and rain – Stay patient, trust the process, and adapt.

  • Harvest at the right time – Recognize progress, celebrate wins, and share success.

This idea applies to so many areas of life—strength, health, personal growth or fitness included. They all require patience, consistency, and the right conditions to grow stronger. Just like a garden, you have to not only prepare, adjust, weed out what’s not working, but you also have to be patient, be intentional, and trust the process.

What word resonates with you right now?

As always, let me know if I can help you.
